Shantitown - Kismet (Video)

‘KISMET’, releasing on the 3rd June 2010 is the debut single from the forthcoming album by SHANTITOWN.

A cardboard shelter under a busy flyover in London, home, no doubt to an unfortunate and anonymous human being, was the inspiration for the name of the band. SHANTiTOWN are about fusion and experimentation.

They combine the musical drive and energy of western rock and suffuse it with the melodic vibe and lyrical poignancy of Indian music. To SHANTiTOWN music is a mystical language that transcends our petty rivalries and shrill noise. If it were not so how could Amar Singh a Hindi/Punjabi vocalist, Ennio Capria an Italian guitarist and Raj Thakral a Rock drummer have ever come together to create the musical force that is SHANTiTOWN.

Their songs are a fusion of sounds and cultures and mirror Amar Singh’s own journey: a soul of the east in the body of the west. They range from ‘Kismet’ a Latin guitar tinged  tribute to the healing power of romantic love to ‘Saareh Jahaan’ a sufi inspired mystical hymn to ‘Kamaal’ ,a heartfelt call  to rise above our religious differences and recognise our common humanity.

Above all else SHANTiTOWN  believe that music is about real musicians playing live instruments responding to the electric feel of a live audience. For the live shows SHANTiTOWN are collaborating and playing live with cutting edge DJ and Producer 'Bad Boy Jackal' to deliver a unique live experience to their fans. SHANTiTOWN are in rehearsals with Jackal for a series of gigs to promote the single and forthcoming album.

Amar Singh

Amar Singh fronts SHANTiTOWN and is a singer who transcends stereotype. The musical tastes that are reflected in his music know no boundaries or bow to any genre. Much like Amar Singh himself his music and style are a confluence of east and west.

Born and bought up in London, Amar Singh grew up listening to the diverse range of music which naturally flows from this melting pot of different cultures that is modern London. Music always flowed through his veins and pulsated deeply in his heart.

Growing up listening to bands such as the U2, Junoon, Maroon5 and singers such as Balwinder Safri, Hari Haran, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan he developed eclectic tastes and always gravitated to the live scene, struck with the almost mystical experience that is generated between performers and audience when everything ‘clicks’.

He formed his first band, playing Bhangra covers, whilst still at college and tasted his first real musical success by winning the Punjabi vocalist category of the Asian Star Search competition organised by renowned producer and tabla maestro: Kuljit Bhamra  (Keda Records).

His debut single: Dil Jaan which he co-wrote and co-produced is featured on the Album ‘Yaaro’ released by Keda Records. The video to this song received extensive play on Asian Channels such as Zee Music and Brit Asia. Having honed his skills as a producer and arranger he has spent the last year recording and producing his debut album with SHANTiTOWN.
