JS Kay - Expressions (Out Now)

Introducing JS.Kay, born and raised in East London, into a very traditional and religious Punjabi family. Music has been a focal point in his life ever since he was introduced to the sound of Bhangra at the age of 4 by his older brother and sister.

JS.Kay’s love for music manifests through his passion and drive which started at a very young age. This drive distinguished him from his peers as he began to develop his musical skills.

JS.Kay taught himself to play the dhol at the age of 9. His love for music grew recognising talent amongst the legendary artists of the 1980’s and 1990’s such as Apna Sangeet, Premi, Geet, Heera, Pardesi, Saqi, The Sahotas, Achanak, Shaktee and other pioneering bands of that time.

During his teenage years JS.Kay began to follow folk singers such as Kuldip Manak, Surinder Shinda and other singers who sing at a high ‘sur’ and are naturally gifted entertainers.  Deconstructing the sound and vocals of these gifted artists gave JS.Kay the ability to recognise true talent at a very young age.

JS.Kay worked hard to develop his vocals which proved a success after his meeting with Sunil Kalyan (Da Product, Legendary 2nd, & Boli-Funk) in 2006. Sunil agreed to produce JS.Kay’s debut album after listening to JS.Kay sing live during their first meeting. After years of hard work, the album is now complete and has been titled ‘Expressions’. This album conveys the expressions of JS.Kay, the lyricists’ who have skilfully penned each song, and the music producer through his music production and composition.

Two music videos have been filmed for this album, for the folk track: Yaar Punjabi Neh, and a giddah track for the ladies titled: Haar Geya Giddah.

A devoted fan of ‘live’ music and bands, JS.Kay has endeavoured to bring the raw and ‘live’ sound into the music production on this album – specially with the use of the percussion instruments such as the tabla, dholki, and dhol, which have all been played by Sunil Kalyan. Sunil is a renowned and respected tabla player within the music industry.

Under the guidance of lead lyrist Mohinder Sirsarhiwala and Sunil Kalyan, JS.Kay has produced his own unique style and sound ensuring that he does not resemble any other artist. This debut album is JS.Kay’s gift back to our colourful Punjabi culture and music which has given the artist so much joy from the first cassette bought by his older brother all those years ago.
