The Bathinda-born, Toronto-based singer and songwriter is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting disruptors in modern music, effortlessly fusing classic Punjabi melodies with elements of modern R&B, hip-hop, and fast-paced Jersey Club beats.

From his breakout presence on the global viral charts with tracks like "Piche Tere" to his latest addictive summer anthem, "Crazy4U," Kunwarr specializes in turning intense, late-night romantic energy into high-energy anthems. You’re Punjabi, you’re based in Toronto, and your sound pulls from hip-hop, R&B and UK influences. Do you ever feel like your music has its own passport now? Like it doesn’t really belong to just one place anymore?

Growing up in Toronto, I was naturally around a mix of sounds hip-hop, R&B, UK influences and Punjabi music. I think all of that has found its way into what I make. I don’t really want to put my music into one box. I like that it can come from different places and still feel like me.

⁠“Crazy4U” is basically that slightly unhinged stage of liking someone where they’re living in your head rent-free. When you were making it, were you pulling from a real feeling or were you creating a whole character and mood around it?

I think “Crazy4U” is more about a feeling than one specific person. There are definitely real emotions in it, but I also like leaving some things open to interpretation. I don’t think every song needs to come with an explanation sometimes it’s better when people can put their own story into it.

Punjabi music is having such a global moment right now, but audiences are also getting harder to impress. What do you think makes a Punjabi track travel beyond our community and connect with someone who might not even understand every word?

It’s a really exciting time for Punjabi music. People outside the community are connecting with it without necessarily needing to understand every single word, which says a lot about how powerful the music itself is. I think we’re only seeing the beginning of how far Punjabi music can travel.

⁠“Piche Tere” has reached numbers most artists would dream about. Does a song hitting 50+ million streams actually change the way you create afterwards, or do you have to almost forget those numbers when you go back into the studio?

It’s an amazing feeling, but once I’m back in the studio, I try not to think about the numbers too much. At the end of the day, you still have to make the next song. I’m grateful for what “Piche Tere” has done, but I’d rather focus on creating than constantly looking back at the numbers.

⁠I always think artists have songs that show where they are now, and songs that hint at who they’re becoming. If “Crazy4U” represents Kunwarr in 2026, what part of you haven’t we heard in the music yet?

There are definitely sides of me people haven’t heard yet. “Crazy4U” is one part of where I am right now, but I don’t want to show everything at once. I like keeping a little mystery around what I’m doing and letting people discover different sides of me through the music. There’s more coming I’d rather let the songs speak when they’re ready.
