Break The Floorboards! - A New Dance Drama

Break The Floorboards, a new dance comedy drama from Rifco Arts and Watford Palace Theatre, will tour this May and June.

Fusing the enthralling dance styles of Bollywood and Street, this is a story about Zain, a teenage Muslim boy. All Zain wants to do is dance, but a disapproving family, peer pressure, his two left feet and an impending fascist march are all getting in his way. A chance meeting with Sophie, a young dancer, ignites hope but can he really escape the grim reality of his recession-hit hometown and turn his life into the glittering world of his Bollywood fantasies.

Break The Floorboards is Rifco Arts’ first full dance project, having previously delighted audiences with hit musicals and dramas such as the award-winning Britain’s Got BhangraThe Deranged MarriageThere’s Something About Simmy and MummyJi Presents. In partnership with Watford Palace Theatre, this new show will explore the fusion of vibrant Bollywood and energetic Street dance styles, whilst presenting a glimpse into the complexities of growing up in a multicultural society.

Break The Floorboards is directed by Pravesh Kumar, Artistic Director of Rifco Arts and the talent behind their numerous hit shows (Britain’s Got Bhangra, The Deranged Marriage, Where’s My Desi Soulmate?). Written by broadcaster, journalist, writer and performer Yasmeen Khan. The production is choreographed by Andy Kumar (Rifco Arts Creative Associate and Bollywood film Choreographer) and Associate Choreographer Maria Swainson (Flashdance the MusicalDaddy Cool, Emeli Sande, Labrinth, The Saturdays). Set design by Libby Watson (A Fine Bright Day Today, The Deranged Marriage) with lighting design by Mark Dymock. Composer Sumeet Chopra who composed the popular score for Britain’s Got Bhangra will be writing the music.

The cast includes Daniel Uppal (Flashdance, Thriller, BBC’s DanceX, ITV’s Britannia High, Rihanna tour, Ciara tour); Carrie Baxter (The Nymph, Boat 13); Alim Jayda (Britain’s Got Bhangra, Annie The Musical); Sheena Patel (Britain’s Got Bhangra, Wah!
