BBC Asian Network axes Bhangra Breakdown show

The BBC Asian Network today confirmed that it has axed popular Bhangra show ‘Bhangra Breakdown’ from its schedule.

The show, which has been hosted by Dipps Bhamrah for the past two years , will no longer run after it’s final 3 broadcasts. The show has proved a popular outlet for UK Bhangra on the station, with its large dedicated listener-ship

The BBC Asian Network has gone through a major revamp, as it looks to scale back its spending. It has already confirmed the departures of popular DJ’s Sonny JI & DJ Kayper from the station.

Bhangra Breakdown will now be replaced by a ‘Punjabi Show’ which will be broadcasted on Sunday’s, more details of which is to be confirmed at a later date.

Dipps Bhamrah, host of the show stated on his facebook page;

For the past 2 years iv been presenting Bhangra Breakdown on BBC Asian Network. For the past 7 years i have been a presenter on the station. With a heavy heart i have to let you know that in 3 weeks time i will be presenting the final Bhangra Breakdown and my final show on BBC Asian Network.

As we all know, BBC Asian Network is launching a new schedule which is to be an ambitious but tighter sche
dule. Unfortunately this means the loss of some shows and strands, including Bhangra Breakdown.

Asian Network still has a real commitment to UK and Bhangra music. Bhangra will continue to have a home on Sunday’s in the new Punjabi show which will launch later in the year. It is not the end for Bhangra music”

Dipps Bhamrah will also be leaving the station.
