dj kapper

Hailed as one of the finest DJs pioneering new music today, British-born DJ Kayper is a seminal force on the urban, mainstream and desi music scenes. Having been approached to host a mainstream radio show for the BBC’s Asian Network in 2006, The DJ Kayper Show has now gone on to become one of the station’s biggest exports with global listenership.

Her show has attracted the biggest and best urban and pop artists such as Common, ?uestlove, Lupe Fiasco, Nelly Furtado, Chamillionaire, Xzibit, Kelly Rowland, Omarion, Amerie and The Game, in addition to UK artists such as Estelle, Sway, Kano and Jay Sean.

As well as supporting well-established artists, Kayper is a fierce advocate of homegrown talent and continually promotes the thriving artists and musicians on her own doorstep. One of the segments on The DJ Kayper Show provides a platform for young up-and-coming artists.

Kayper has championed UK sounds for as long as she has been a DJ. Alongside a fraternity including DJ 279 and Skully & Pogo, they formed The Associates and held down one of London’s hottest urban music club nights, ‘Get Down,’ at urban music staple club, Bar Rumba. She also created a weekly night of hip-hop & dancehall, ‘Ebonics,’ which ran for 5 years.

In 2004, DJ Kayper (Kajaal Bakrania) become the first female to win the Vestax Juice DJ Competition, which prompted Vestax to snap her up and officially sponsor her as a DJ. Winning this competition brought her to the forefront of the DJ scene, and she was booked across the UK from London and Birmingham to Leicester and Manchester. She has headlined at some of the world’s most renowned nightclubs, including London’s Ministry of Sound and Bar Rumba, and New York City’s SOB’s, The Knitting Factory and Joe’s Pub. She has also performed at Malaysia’s Zouk Club, Johannesburg’s Coca Cola Zone, Ibiza’s El Divino and Mumbai’s largest Prive. She was nominated for Best Club DJ at the 2008 and 2009 UK AMAs.

Her innate ability to understand audiences worldwide and keep the dance floors rocking has put her in demand with club promoters as well as large corporations; she has spun at a variety of Carphone Warehouse events. She has spun wax alongside her idol, DJ Jazzy Jeff, as well as DJ Cash Money, Clinton Sparks, Killa Kela, Scratch Perverts and Mr. Thing. She’s also played as a support DJ to performances by Pete Rock, Pharaoh Monch, Ghostface (Wu-Tang Clan), Guru (Gangstarr), Common, Arrested Development and Roy Ayres. She has also promoted and created nationwide tours with Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money and Shortee Blitz.

Her mischievousness as kid both earned her the name DJ Kayper and got her into djing in the first place. “I was a bit of a tomboy,” she says, “and I used to watch my two older cousins practice on the decks. They had a residency at the Ministry of Sound then. My older brother bought some turntables but hardly used them, so when he would go out, I would hook up the turntables and play random stuff I found around the house. One day my brother came home and found me practicing and asked, ‘Who taught you how to do that?’ I had taught myself.”

Detecting her talent, her brother and cousins encouraged her to develop her skills and guided her in the right direction. She clocked countless hours of arduous practice, never tiring of playing in order to come up with her own unique style. She made her first serious premiere as a DJ at London’s Ministry of Sound. Her journey has not been without its hardships, though. Being a female has meant that she has endured being outcast by other DJs who would later come to embrace her as an esteemed equal.

“I knew I had to toughen up after my first proper gig,” she says. “The bouncer wouldn’t let me in, and when the people I was with pointed out I was performing, the look on his face told me everything I needed to know.”

Being of Indian heritage has meant that Kayper’s ears were exposed to a different musical experience from a young age. Styles of Indian music have subliminally embedded themselves in her mind, which only increases her versatility and creativity as a DJ. She effortlessly melds together hip-hop with bhangra, house with Bollywood, and dancehall with soca. She artfully juggles beats and scratch techniques even to prime-time club audiences. It is this unique talent that gained the attention of a now cult audience who come to watch her play.

“My sound is different,” she says. “It can change from house to bhangra to R&B, hard to commercial, student to Asian styles. But in the end, all roads lead to hip-hop.”

Her long lines of successes are what cement her status and demand as a multi-talented DJ. With her finger firmly on the pulse, balanced with an encyclopedic knowledge of all that is hip-hop, Kayper is on her long road to stardom.

You can catch her Friday nights, 10pm to 1am (58pm EST), on the BBC Asian Network mixing up the best in hip-hop, R&B, funky house, dubstep and desi music.
